Playing as a team - 14.1

Playing with strangers

In one line: With four strangers, the team that communicates most and argues least wins. Short, neutral information, a simple plan proposed early and calm when things go badly are worth more than any flashy play.

Why it is different

In a game with strangers, nobody knows how the others play, nobody has decided who leads, and often nobody feels like talking. There is no plan and no shared habits. In these conditions, the team that manages to put together a minimum of organization almost always wins, even if it plays worse as individuals.

The good news is that it takes very little. One player who calls information, proposes a simple plan and stays calm changes the mood of the whole team. You do not need to be the best: you need to be the one who makes playing together easier.

This chapter explains what to do in the first seconds, how to communicate with people you do not know, what to do when nobody talks and how to handle the hard moments.
