Part 5

Information

Minimap, sound, kill feed, recon utility, reasoning and communication.

With equal aim, whoever knows more wins. This part teaches you to gather information (minimap, sound, kill feed, recon abilities), to reason about it by separating what you know from what you think, and to pass it to your team in a few words. It is the part that, more than any other, separates players who stay stuck from players who climb.

Chapters

  1. The minimap as your second brain

The minimap tells you at all times where your teammates are, where enemies were spotted, where abilities are and where the fighting is: check it after every important event and the whole round becomes easier to read.

  2. Sound

Footsteps, reloads, abilities and the spike tell you where the enemies are and what they are doing; but sounds can deceive too, so always read them together with your other information.

  3. Kill feed, enemy spotted and the scoreboard

The kill feed tells you who died, where and with what; the scoreboard tells you your teammates' money, everyone's ultimates and how the match has gone. Together with the minimap, they are free sources of information.

  4. Utility that gives information

Drones, arrows, sensors, cameras and traps tell you where the enemies are, but each one tells you something specific and leaves other things out. Use them with a question in mind, at the right moment, with the team ready to act on the answer.

  5. What I know, what I think, what I assume

Always separate three levels: what you know for certain, what you think is likely, and what you are only assuming. The five questions help you get from information to a decision.

  6. Worked example: from information to probability

An attacking round reasoned step by step: Raze spotted in mid, Cypher on A, a smoke on B, nobody else seen. By combining what you know, timing and habits, you reach a probability to decide on, not a certainty.

  7. Communication

Good communication is short, precise and useful: where, how many, what. Information comes before opinions, you go quiet at delicate moments, and you ask for help early.
