Defense - 8.2
Contesting, passive and aggressive defense, anchors
In one line: A defense can wait for the attack on site or go out to meet it to take space and information. Both work if chosen at the right moment and if the team knows who does what: who stays as the anchor, who contests.
Two ways to defend
There are two basic ways to defend:
- passive: you wait for the attack on site, in prepared positions, and let them be the ones who have to show themselves;
- aggressive: you go out to meet the attack, in the areas it is trying to take (a main, mid), to surprise it, gather information and take space away.
Neither is "right". A defense that is always passive gives the attack all the space and time it wants; one that is always aggressive gets punished as soon as the attack works out where to find it. The best defenses alternate, choosing their style based on the map, the economy and what the attack did in previous rounds.
